Adams County Tech Prep
Shawn Eckenrode, Director of Adams County Tech Prep

The club was hosted at the Adams County Technical Prep building on the Gettysburg Area High School campus and we were treated to a great meal prepared by students in the Culinary Arts program. The Culinary Arts Chef Instructor Jeremy Schaffner took special pride in hosting the club and reminded all in attendance that 18 years ago he received a scholarship from the club to continue his educational studies. Assisting Schaffner with the meal were student sous chefs Haley Bolin, Lea Unger, Brianna Laramy, Joshua Cooper, Alan Bobadilla, Jonatan Gonzalez and Daniel Evens. Shawn Eckenrode, the Tech Prep Director, presented some historical perspective on the tech prep programs and also updated club members on some exciting changes coming to the program. The building that we enjoyed lunch and tours in was built in 2012 and the programs are run under the Career Technical Education Program at the Gettysburg Area School District. Eckenrode who spent 20+ years teaching electronics to students in Franklin County schools portrayed a great passion for the programs he currently oversees and truly recognizes how important the programs are to Adams County students. Currently, the GASD program runs in conjunction with the Adams County program with the Adams County CTP program offering seven programs to allow students from five Adams County school districts to train in different disciplines and industries. The seven include: Diesel Mechanics, Law Enforcement, Culinary Arts, Allied Health, Computer Networking, Building Trade and Early Learning/Pre-School. At GASD students can also take part in Horticulture, Animal Science, Engineering Technology, Accounting Technology and Communication Technology.
All of the programs are taught by instructors with real life experience in the industries that they teach and all are full trained educators. The tech prep programs continue to grow in popularity and other programs could be added in the near future. Eckenrode also explained that a Joint Operating Agreement has been signed by GASD, Littlestown Area School District, Fairfield Area School District, Bermudian Springs School District and Conewago Valley School District which will further define the future of the county tech prep program and give it a more definitive position and standing within Adams County.
